possibly the ultimate blondie
totally stumped as to what to bring to food curated potluck tonight (how do you compete with lobster rolls and liddabit salted caramels) so i decided to just go overboard with butter, sugar, and other so-bad-they’re-good ingredients.
my ultimate blondie:
start with smitten kitchen’s foolproof blondie recipe. then add brown butter. and butterscotch chips. and chocolate chips. and...
raw foods and yoga
i’m reasonably worried that i might have a small chia plant growing in my stomach right now. after hanging out with a raw food friend last weekend (who prescribed hemp seed protein, goji berries, and kefir to counteract my indulgent eating habits) and running across this yogi/beauty guru’s site, i am curious about all these super foods. and so, breakfast of chia seeds, almond milk,...
natalie merchant at ted. she’s a little nutty and dresses like an early 90s school marm (did anyone see the early show this morning? eep) but her voice + old poems is pretty amazing

so i couldn’t wait. i had to dip into the soup 30 minutes shy of its done time. it’s comforting, and creamy, but not quite ambrosial - i am thinking it’s going to be pretty amazing tomorrow.
recipe here. i used farro instead of barley, added carrots and spinach.

sunday find: strala yoga
i have a theory (one of many) about new york. i think the city makes you crave everyday rituals — if you have a routine - a morning coffeeshop, a regular bar - then you automatically have ownership over that thing. this is all to say that i was pretty upset when my regular sunday yoga class was canceled a few months ago. for someone as un-zen as me, my sunday evening stretching and bending was...

the menu:
22 pound turkey (not organic, alas, but purchased from the sustainable-minded meat market)

new green bean casserole (brooklyn star recipe)
roasted winter squash and parsnips with maple syrup and marcona almonds (inspired by wonderful much depends on dinner blog)

New Amsterdam Market
Cold sunny day. Dozens of amazing food purveyors. Happy crowds. Salted caramel bourbon ice cream from the Bent Spoon. Porchetta’s porky, greasy mini sandwiches, Dickson’s chicken liver pate, Sweet Deliverance pies, Port Clyde crab claws, Great Performances’s beet chips…My ideal way to spend a Sunday. Technically I was volunteering but the height of my helpfulness was...
OM and yum
It’s not that I don’t understand basic nutrition - I really like healthy foods - but sometimes I just want a cookie. Which is why, after tonight’s yoga class, I made a nod toward antioxidants with a few bites of sauteed turnip greens and some beet chips… then proceeded to tuck into a massive Levain Bakery dark chocolate-chip cookie. The tummy ache is on the horizon but I...

new amsterdam market at the south street seaport this sunday. amazing list of vendors, including saxelby’s cheeses, fleischer’s meats, mother-in-law’s kimchee, and mast brothers chocolate, plus food from jimmy’s no 43, marlow and sons, and luke’s lobster. and i’ll be volunteering!
norwood
everytime i go to soho house i feel the urge to fake a british accent. (i also feel insecure about my lack of leather jacket, louboutins, and country house.) it’s not my type of club, as much as i love the cozy lounge area and wonderchef neil ferguson. last night i had drinks at another private downtown club, norwood. despite being smack in the middle of icky fourteenth street, the six-story...

the week in review.
you can tell it was an unseasonably warm week because people were lingering in the parks and shake shack ranked right up there (or maybe that was just because of the pumpkin pie custard). when the temps get more brisk you’ll want to switch over to the UWS location or hit up one of the city’s other burger stars (my personal favorites: prune and burger joint).

on healthy tasting foods
for someone who loves sweets as much as i do, i have a good appreciation for non-traditional baked goods. i love the oversized vegan cookies at soy luck club, have been known to go for seconds when babycakes birthday cakes appear in the office, and find organic nectars’s raw gelato strangely satisfying. that said, the idea of gluten-free baking mixes never appealed to me: i’m not...
